“There is a kind of beauty in imperfection.” ~ Conrad Hall

{clockwise from top: Lara Stone, Georgia Jagger, Vanessa Paradis, Lindsey Wixson, Iekeliene Stange, Ashley Smith}

One of my favorite things about the fashion industry is its appreciation for imperfections. Twiggy and Lauren Hutton are not fashion icons because they have perfect skin and symmetrical faces, they’re icons because they have an interesting and unusual look. Twiggy became an icon because of her mystifyingly waifish figure, and Lauren Hutton is known because of her eccentric personality and atypical smile…which brings me to the topic of today’s post.

Recently, gap toothed models have taken over runways, ad campaigns and editorial spreads in some of fashion’s most respected magazines. Georgia Jagger is the face of Hudson Jeans, Ashley Smith just had an editorial spread in W Magazine, and Lara Stone has graced the cover of countless magazines. As someone who experienced six painful years of orthodontia, I have a serious amount of respect for these girls (or their parents) who opted against the embarrassing and uncomfortable braces and left their smiles toothy and spacey. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am eternally grateful for my awkward years spent with a mouth full of metal, but it does go to show that there are certain “imperfections” that are in fact strikingly beautiful and it’s about time we start embracing them.
