Birthday Weekend

October 11, 2010

In the past my birthday weekends consisted of large dinner parties and nights out on the town and although having a birthday on 10-10-10 should be a perfect excuse for a big bash, this year I opted for a more low key birthday weekend spent with my Mom who flew in from San Francisco and close friends.

The weekend started off with an indulgent trip to Opening Ceremony and then I spent the rest of the day embracing my inner five year old at an indoor carnival at the Park Avenue Armory. I have loved carnivals for as long as I can remember; from the wacky magicians and fluffy cotton candy to the whirly rides and silly games it’s hard to imagine a more fun way to spend a day. Even though I was the oldest person there without a child in tow, I had a wonderful time making goofy faces in funhouse mirrors and losing a number of times at the water gun game (it’s harder than it looks!). I did end up winning a small stuffed animal seal and a toy rocket at a rubber ducky game that wasn’t as exciting as the water gun game but much easier to succeed at.

The rest of the weekend was spent eating rich foods and delectable desserts (see here for an in depth review of my birthday brunch at Balthazar) and celebrating with friends and family. Birthdays can so often feel overwhelming and exhausting, but this weekend was hassle free and beyond fun – a perfect way to begin a new year.

Below are some pictures from the carnival.
