Birthday Surprise

March 31, 2010

Last Thursday, I flew home to San Francisco to surprise my brother for his 26th Birthday. I showed up at his restaurant, The Moss Room, for lunch, carrying a bundle of balloons, and his reaction was priceless!

Confused Surprise - "Sonia?! What the hell are you doing here?!!!!?"

After eating a delicious meal of:

Housemade Pita Bread and Hummus

Tagliatelle with Roasted Parsnips, Apple Wood Smoked Bacon and Radicchio

And a cocktail called the Little Red Dress consisting of Vodka, Sparkling Rosé, Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange

I scurried back home to help my Mom with the preparations for the birthday party which took place later that evening. One of my favorite things to do with my Mom is create menus, cook, and decorate for delicious dinner parties filled with good food, family and friends. For this celebration, we went for a bright Spring inspired table with a home-style menu.

Our first course was also Spring inspired:

Heirloom Tomato, Avocado & Basil Salad

Cannellini Bean, Arugula, Parsley & Grilled Shrimp Salad

But, the second course was comfort food all the way:

Grilled Asparagus, Mashed Potatoes, & Roast Beef, all topped with Bernaise Sauce

Before we served the Birthday Cake, I busted out some party favor mustaches that were a huge hit…

and seemed to look good on everyone…

And then, despite how full we were, we polished off the entire meal with a chocolate on chocolate birthday cake

YUM!

It was so wonderful to be at home with family and friends, I really don’t get back there enough.

What do you and your family do for birthday celebrations?

We fight over the cake! Everyone in my family has an extreme sweet tooth, so birthdays are just another excuse for us to indulge, and argue over who got more ha.
